Try A Trench For Spring!

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Mar 26, 2012 2:16:00 PM

In case you didn’t know, a trench coat is like a raincoat, only it is made of cotton poplin, gabardine wool or sometimes leather. It is usually knee length and has a removable lining for when the weather gets a little warmer. Thomas Burberry, who shares the famous British fashion brand name, is credited with the original design of this outerwear staple in 1901. This type of coat was intended to replace the much heavier coats that were worn by soldiers in World War I.spring fashion trends

Burberry’s eponymous design included numerous pockets, epaulets and D-rings placed to accommodate map cases, swords and other equipment, which could literally be attached to the coat. Soldiers were the ones who dubbed it the “trench coat,” as it was worn in battle and came in handy to fend off the cold and dampness in the trenches. Many veterans, fortunate to return home, started wearing the coats in their civilian life and thus a fashion trend was born!

Magazines and runways alike often feature variations of this perennial fashion favorite each season. There are so many adaptations that you can take your pick based on your own fashion sensibilities. From mild to wild, you just can’t go wrong when it comes to this versatile, transitional wardrobe piece. This type of coat is a practical investment for men and women, so be sure to take a look at the racks of coats at the nearest Goodwill Store to score your own take on this classic style icon.amazing goodwill fashion trends

Trench coats come in single and double breasted styles and some have no buttons at all, just a tie belt! Which one will you choose? It all starts, as does everything in the style and fashion world, with fit and proportion. When trying on a coat or jacket of any kind, but especially one that is made to go over other clothing like the trench, take care to see that the shoulder of the coat rests on the end of your natural shoulder. The sleeve length should be a little past your wrist, but no longer.

The overall length of the coat will be totally dependent on your personal style. However, a good rule of thumb is wearing a shorter coat if you are on the shorter side and a longer coat if you’re taller. You can see examples in our pictures of good fit. When in doubt, always go for a shorter style that will hit knee length or above. If you’re a little curvy, steer clear of the voluminous trenches and go for a more tailored and streamlined look. The belt will help define the waistline without adding unnecessary bulk.

Next time you’re out shopping at Goodwill, scan the racks for bold colors and animal print versions of this jacket. These trends are hot right now and will give you a wardrobe update in a flash! I have seen some trench coats with contrasting sleeve detail or stitching, as well as people swapping out the matching belt and adding one of their own choosing; just to shake it up a little.goodwill fashion trends

The sky is the limit when it comes to putting it all together. That is the genius of finding your own style approach at Goodwill Stores, where access to the latest trends at a price you can afford, allows your creative spirit to shine through. So try a trench today and put your spring and summer wardrobe on the fashion map!
