Mommy Makeover with Goodwill

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Apr 26, 2012 11:39:00 AM

Whether it’s your first pregnancy or your third, the age-old question of “What do I wear?” rears its head. Most women really don’t have a plan ready for their wardrobe during the nine months or so of the average pregnancy. Naturally, their thoughts are all revolving around the baby and its needs, not theirs. They play the “mom martyr” role and usually try to make do with the things they have that could be worn as their size increases. But, then at the last minute feel like nothing fits, flatters or is remotely fashionable. This is where the Goodwill store in your neighborhood comes in. Did you know that Goodwill now has a maternity section in many stores? In addition to that piece of news, I will share some of my tips on what to look for throughout the store to perk up your style as you get ready to welcome the new addition to your life, family and home.goodwill maternity

Empire waist tops and dresses

Their style power is proven, given these types of looks have been around for a long time. I’m sure you know that this silhouette is the most flattering to anyone who has issues with their waistline - or someone who just wants a comfortably fitting garment. By nipping you in under the bust line it draws attention away from your midsection and up to your face. Look for colorful pieces that are easy to throw on when you don’t know what else to wear.

Tunic tops

Tunic tops are meant to be loose and flowing. They are a simple pullover style that usually requires no buttons or closures of any kind. Stylish and trendy, they are oftentimes done up in ethnic prints and embroidery. These are the perfect thing to wear with jeans, shorts and skirts.

Elastic/ Drawstring waist skirts

Just because it doesn’t say “maternity” doesn’t mean you can’t wear it. Try everything on before you decide it doesn’t fit. Elastic waist skirts or drawstring skirts that flow are another fashion example for the mom to be. They can be worn throughout the pregnancy and even again after. They look stunning with sandals, a blousy t-shirt and some statement jewelry.

Wrap sweaters and cardigans

I’ve seen this look a lot of times on moms-to-be. The great thing about a cardigan sweater, or wrap, is that it doesn’t have to be buttoned up all the way. It can be worn more as a coat or jacket. It allows for your growing mid-section and doesn’t have the constriction that many women hate.

Swing coats and dresses

These are also called “trapeze” coats and dresses. The idea here is that they fit at the shoulder and then float away from the body in a full, almost circular way. They aren’t necessarily for maternity, but would work well to keep you looking professional at work and comfortable in your daily life.

Don’t forget that looking at the plus-size racks is also a great idea because style is an attitude, not a number. Lots of items could and would work well for a woman of any size. Silhouettes, like the ones I’ve mentioned here, is what you should focus on at this point in your maternal journey. It’s nice to know that Goodwill has a lot of your growing fashion needs covered while you’re looking forward to the blessed event.
