It’s in the Bag!

If you ask any woman what her most important accessory is, most likely she would say her handbag. Not only does it serve as a most functional place to store all sorts of things such as make up, cell phone, wallet and house keys, but it’s also a fashion statement! There are evening bags, as well as other types of purses, of course , but the one that we’re going to focus on in this week’s blog is a day-to-day bag that a gal would use ALL the time. Or, at least a majority of the time as she goes about life.

Getting Tanked!

DIY is always fun because it’s a great, inexpensive and creative way to reuse or repurpose—just like our Goodwill motto clearly states! The humble t-shirt is a great example of an item that is just perfectly primed for repurposing. Especially for summer! One of my favorite things about summer clothing (for guys in particular) is that it allows us to wear tank tops of all kinds—from athletic wear to more fashionable styles.

Summertime Cool Kids

Designer Kathleen Hanhee Kye and her fashion brand KYE is a favorite at Fashion Weeks around the world for its exuberant take on street culture and design for the young and impossibly hip. That being said, it doesn’t at all take away from the fact that this Korean designer really knows her way around tailoring and modern silhouettes.

White Hot Summer…

“Summertime and the living is easy,” at least, that’s how the famous song goes. But, one thing that’s definitely an easy choice in summer is wearing white clothing. Crisp and cool cottons and linens let the sun bounce off, and the breezes come through! Designer Zang Toi, inspired by the Greek Island of Santorini, delighted the audience with stunning pieces in white that would be perfect for a summer party, lounging around a beach town, or looking chic while perusing the shops of a charming resort.

Prince of Prints!

Summer clothes can be perplexing for some people.  You might ask yourself, how can I remain sophisticated, but still appear fun-loving when it comes to my fashion choices?  Well, this week you’re in for a feast for your eyes, as well as your mind. Following is a collection from fashion designer, Chris Benz

Passing Summer Parade

When I lived in Madison, Wisconsin in the late 1970s, the first vintage clothing stores I ever encountered were just starting to open on State Street. I was really fascinated by seeing all the pieces from different eras, but I especially liked the turn of the century, or Victorian pieces. The white cotton christening dresses, the elaborate crochet, lace, or cutwork on the blouses, the sailor tops and all the rest left an impression on me.

Russian Dressing!

Fashion is a universal language of sorts isn’t it? A friend of mine who works at Goodwill in Oak Creek told me about an employee there who emigrated from Russia to the United States last year. I was told that his passion for fashion and design were really something so, of course, I had to find out more … Meet future fashion star Konstantin!

By the Sea!

There’s nothing quite like going to the beach for a relaxing day soaking up the sunshine while listening to the waves lapping the shore and feeling the warm and balmy breezes. A few seasons ago at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week for Spring and Summer 2013, fashion designer Joy Cioci channeled all of the above to create the inspiration for her presentation.

Sheer Genius!

Everything in fashion has gone sheer these days, hasn’t it? Some looks on the runway and red carpet are super cool, but they show a bit more skin than most of us are comfortable with. So, how can the average gal pull off these airy styles when it comes to the summer months? Navigating this trend tastefully, as well as fashionably isn’t as hard as you think. Let me show you how …

Beyond the Pale Fashions

Pastels that have just a hint of color have always signaled spring, summer, and sophistication when it comes to formal occasions. With June in full swing, the brides, bridesmaids, and attendees of weddings and events across the country are looking for unique and modern ways to dress for the warmer season ahead. Designer Nina Skarra of Norway, isn’t necessarily a bridal designer, but when I saw this collection during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week S/S 2013, I couldn’t help but think of the subtle glamour of old Hollywood, as well as how well-suited her pieces would be for a formal summer affair!

Dreamy Summer Accessories

If ever there was a season to ramp up your accessory game it’s summer—pure and simple. Why? Because we pare down on our clothing due to the warm weather, but we also adopt lighter fabrics as well as more flowing clothing to catch the breeze and celebrate the beauty of nature. This allows for more embellishment to add to our ensembles! Summer accessories should take their cues from what we see around us; the golden rays of the sun, the way it glimmers and shines on the water of pools, lakes, and maybe, if you’re lucky, the ocean! This week I collected an assortment of accessories that could be worn year round but are still perfectly suited for the anticipated season ahead!

Top It Off!

One of the best things about summer here in the Midwest is ditching the winter duds for bright and breezy clothing! It seems the minute the temperature goes above let’s say 40 degrees, people start sporting flip flops, maxi dresses and short shorts! Since our season is rather short, it’s very wise to be ready for the warm and welcoming sunshine with a wardrobe full of wearable separates. This week we’ll take a look at some spectacular tops I picked up at Goodwill. What’s great about tops is that they can be worn alone, or they look awesome as a layering piece under blazers, shirts and jackets. You really need to have some basic pieces like tank tops and plain t-shirts of course, but you should also keep on the lookout for stand-out toppers like the ones in my slideshow.
