Winter 2012-2013 Clothing Tips & Trends

Holiday work parties, family get-togethers, shopping trips and caroling; winter calls for an array of activities. And these activities call for stylish looks for each occasion! But don’t fret, winter’s fashion trends will help you get through every outing with a fashionable breeze. Each trend is broad enough that you will be able to easily translate it into your wardrobe – aren’t those the best trends anyways? Jingle bell time, it’s a swell time, to go ridin’ in a one horse sleigh… wearing printed jeans, brocade, peplums, velvet and boyfriend cardigans!

Printed JeansPrinted Jeans:

There’s a pattern starting in the denim world, a pattern ON the denim that is! This year we’ve seen denim go from standard blue, to an array of colors. But this season, patterns and prints are making a splash onto the scene. We love the contrast that colorful printed jeans bring to winter’s usual dreary tones. You’ll mainly see printed jeans in a skinny jean fit. You’ll want to stick to this simple fit, as flared jeans will add too much to the look. A pair of simple flats or boots and a solid top will give the relaxed look we’ve mainly seen with printed jeans. We think these jeans make the perfect outfit for caroling, Christmas shopping or relaxing around the warm fire!

Tip: Don’t be hesitant to wear prints, regardless of your body type. Simply look for a small repetitive pattern on a dark background. This look will be the most complimentary to any shape!

Brocade copyBrocade:

Brocade can be described as a richly decorated woven fabric. Due to its luxurious appearance, brocade has often been associated with wealth and elegance.  Luckily, designers have recently begun using the look of brocade in their collections, making this rich trend easier on our budgets! It’s also taken on a more relaxed look, making this trend more accessible to your personal style. This season, you’ll see brocade in blouses, dresses, dress pants and even on handbags. We love the decorative look brocade brings to any outfit, especially dresses. Try out a brocade dress at your holiday work party or New Year’s event! Keep your accessories simple, as you’ll want the decorative fabric to be the main focus. A simple pair of black heels and black stud earrings will do the trick!

PeplumsPeplums:

Peplums began hitting the runway early in 2012, and now we’re seeing this flared ruffle look added to an abundance of fashion pieces.  Tops, dresses, coats and skirts are all rockin’ the peplum look this season. We can’t get enough of peplum skirts; the ruffles add just a hint of sassiness to a normally streamlined article of clothing. One of our favorite things about this look is that it’s great for all body types! Peplums emphasize your hips, giving you an awesome hourglass shape. For this chilly weather, wear a light peplum skirt with a pair of black tights to keep your legs warm. For the office, don your skirt and tights with a white button up shirt and black flats. Or, take your look to a New Year’s party by accessorizing with a black blouse, dark heels and gold jewelry!

Tip: If you’re on the shorter side, look for a peplum top. The ruffles will hit higher than they would on a skirt, so your dark jeans or trousers will give you the long legged effect. To emphasize curves, choose a solid colored dress with peplums. This will emphasize your hip area, showing off your curves in all of the right places!

Velvet FabricVelvet:

Velvet is the fabric for winter! It’s luxurious, sophisticated and looks captivating in almost every color you can imagine! You’ll see a lot of velvet on form fitting items this season; skinny jeans, blazers, dresses and even shoes are utilizing the fabric. We couldn’t be happier with this though, as velvet is at its best when it’s tailored. If you’re hesitant to go full force with a pair of velvet skinny jeans, start small with a pair of velvet textured heels. Be sure to add some pep to your step with a jeweled hue though! One of our favorite ways to wear velvet this season is with a burgundy blazer! Burgundy has been the go-to color for the chilly season, and translates beautifully onto velvet. Pair with dark skinny jeans and black heels for a casual work outfit or holiday party look! Steer clear of shiny accessories with velvet; you don’t want to take away from the luxurious look of the fabric.

Boyfriend CardiganBoyfriend Cardigans:

If one thing is certain with winter outfits, it’s that we all want to stay warm and comfortable. The boyfriend cardigan does that, while keeping us stylish - bonus! Termed ‘boyfriend’ cardigan for its oversized fit, these slouchy sweaters are wonderfully versatile. You can wear one in the office, to a party and anywhere in between. For the office, pair a colorful boyfriend cardigan with a black pencil skirt and dark tank top. Cinch your waist with a thin black belt to give your look some shape. We love the look of a boyfriend cardigan with dark skinny jeans and flats. Find a coordinating color of belt to add shape and you’re set! If you go sans belt, accessorize with long necklaces to emphasize the v-neck shape of the sweater. Since this trend is fairly casual, go bold with your color choices. Jeweled tones look fantastic; the more vibrant the better!
