Fall 2014 Home Tips & Trends

Ah fall; cozy sweaters, apple cider, logs in the fireplace and the smell of burning leaves – we love everything about this season! As the temperature begins to drop, we tend to focus on the transition of our wardrobe, but don’t forget about transitioning your home décor as well! This season’s trends are all about the contrast of colors and textures. Your home will look amazing for fall using trends that include dark indigo hues, luxe texture, industrial lighting, selenite and dark and light contrast.

indigoindigoDark Indigo Hues

Why they made the list: Indigo this season has been given a moody vibe, and it’s simply beautiful! This hue screams global style, but in an alluring subtle way. We love that you can add as much indigo to a space as you desire, and it never feels like too much.

Pull it Off: This season, you’ll see indigo used everywhere from walls to rugs! For a subtle splash of the moody hue, add an indigo table runner or entryway rug. Or, if you want to take the color up a notch, add splashes of indigo all over one space; small pillows, flower vases, ottomans and even a coffee table all within one space looks outstanding!

luxe textureluxe textureLuxe Texture

Why it made the list: Who doesn’t love luxurious textures scattered throughout their home? From faux fur bedspreads, to corduroy couches, designers are putting a lot of thought into how much our sense of touch appeals to our design choices. This season’s textures give us that perfect amount of coziness we’re craving during the chillier months!

Pull it Off: This trend allows for a lot of personality to be put into your space, all based on the feel of your space! Looking for a romantic space? Add touches of faux fur or satin through your throw pillows, duvets and blankets. If you’re working with a rustic space, corduroy and textured woods in your furniture allow you to play off of that!

industrial lightingIndustrial Lighting

Why it made the list: This trend plays off of the vintage vibe that has seen quite the resurgence over the past year. This season, designers are having even more fun with it, through the use of lighting. Changing out light fixtures is a quick way to transform a space; we love that versatility!

Pull it Off: It’s all about exposed light bulbs! Filament light bulbs, specifically, evoke that “old time” feel that industrial lighting is all about. These bulbs have a thin coil of wire (filament) that really stands out! Try this trend out in an entryway, or even a bathroom, by adding exposed bulb sconces to the walls. It’s a quick addition that can make all the difference! Not ready to hang new lights? Head to your local Goodwill for a new lamp stand and forget the lamp shade. That’s right! Simply add a filament bulb to a metal lamp stand – place this on a side table and voila!

seleniteSelenite

Why it made the list: This mineral is popping up everywhere! We love the subtle romantic touch selenite adds to whatever space you add it in. Selenite gets its name from mythical Greek moon goddess Selene; aptly named!

Pull it Off: Many designers, such as Nate Ricketts Design, are offering up home decor items in selenite such as picture frames, votive holders, lamp stands and more! If your room has a lot of clean crisp lines, go ahead and fill it with a bolder piece of selenite, like a “wood” log in the fireplace or a mirror in the bathroom. If you’d like a more subtle take on the trend, add a set of votive holders to the space. There’s really no wrong way to do it!

dark and lightdark and lightDark and Light Contrast

Why it made the list: We love trends that are effortless to pull off, and this is one of them! The contrast of dark and light colors in one room is truly eye-catching and sophisticated. It also adds warmth to the space, which is exactly what your home needs as we prepare for holiday guests!

Pull it Off: The key is to work with what you have as a foundation. If you have dark hardwood floors, use them! Add lighter fabrics throughout the rest of the room, through couch covers, blankets and pillows. If a large amount of your space is composed of light neutrals, add something dark that can become the focal point. This can be done by painting/staining a fireplace an espresso or black hue, or by adding a dark leather chair or coffee table.
