The ‘80s are definitely back in case you haven’t noticed!  Many of the looks from some of the iconic films of the era like “The Breakfast Club”, “Pretty in Pink”, and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, have made their way back onto the fashion scene.  

Almost all of these films share the common theme of High School angst, and the action takes place in the schools themselves. From these comes a trend that is poised to make a major comeback in fashion this season, the Varsity Jacket. 

Anyone who has played sports in school, or even if you didn’t, may remember how the kids who did wear these special jackets, stood out from the crowd. Traditionally the term “Letter Jacket” is used when a team member is awarded a letter for participating in team sports or activities. In some cases the jacket is also used as prize for athletics or academics.  From what I can recall, it was also a sign of elitism, because you had to earn it!

The body of the coat is usually made of some sort of wool, with the sleeves made of leather.  They almost always feature elasticized-banded wrists and waistband. They are typically made of colors that represent the school. The basic style though, always remains pretty much the same. Nowadays you can get this hot fashion trend without even hitting the practice field!

We’ve seen these coats on the runways of New York and Paris Fashion Weeks, as well as on the stage or even the red carpet, when worn by celebrities and rock stars. The variety you may be able to find at the Goodwill Retail Store & Donation Center near you, could surprise you!

How can you make it look like fashion and not like you’re going to your High School reunion?  Let’s go through my list of do’s and don’ts for this movement in the fashion arena!

Do keep it casual; this is not a “dressy” look!

Do look for colors and treatments that would work well with other casual pieces in your wardrobe.

Do accessorize with hats or any other sporty items you may have.  Accessorizing these coats is key to the “cool” look.

Do wear with jeans or even dress slacks, for the best look.

Do go for a nerdy look with your footwear, how about some rolled jeans and penny loafers paired with your coat? Or may I suggest some menswear inspired two-tone shoes like some of the models here.

Don’t forget that you’ll need to keep all the other elements in your outfit cohesive with the jacket.

Don’t wear any jacket that is too large or you might just look like you’re in costume.

Don’t forget to look at what your parents may have in the attic.  “Vintage” jackets are all the rage now, so ask around if someone in your family has one!

Don’t wear these with lightweight or slinky dresses, which would just be too much of a contrast.
