Heavy Metal for Great Fall Fashion

The metallic trend is anything but cold this fall.  Bronze, silver, pewter and gunmetal are making appearances on runways, and lucky for you, at the Goodwill Store & Donation Center near you.

These flashy tones have been a mainstay in accessories like shoes and handbags for years, but now they are showing their mettle (LOL!) in great looking takes on the traditional biker jacket.  With amazing new materials like soft synthetics and edgier silhouettes they’re putting a spin on virtually everything from jeans to dresses for the fashionably inclined.

I found this Candies brand metallic coat at the Goodwill near me for $14.99.  It’s a great pewter color, somewhere between silver and gray, tinged with blue and purple. This coat will spark up even the oldest pieces of your fall and winter wardrobe.  I paired it here with a black satin jumpsuit and beaded belt for a more evening look!  I did some research online and saw pieces like this ranging in price from $29.00 to over $700.00!

I know that many people think of metallic pieces as gaudy, but with a few tips and the right tone or shade, it can become sophisticated and elegant.  Look for designer details like topstitching and epaulets, which will lend any jacket a helping hand in the fashion department.

Styles we’re seeing now include cropped jackets and double-breasted trench coats, alongside the more traditional zip up “motorcycle” jacket like the one I found.  The important thing you should know is that the right fit is the key.  If a coat is too tight, it will be hard to layer it over other items in your closet.  If it is too big, you’ll lose that edgy silhouette that is so very in style right now!

The trend has also moved over to knit wear as well, with silver lurex threads showing up in otherwise “normal” knits.  This is where you can take advantage of the many “vintage” items at the Goodwill store near you. You may opt for a metallic cowl neck sweater that will peek out from under your blazer at work.  I have also seen jeans and leggings that have a metallic sheen or decoration on them. Or perhaps look for a blouse, dress or jacket that features some sort of metallic embroidery.

To keep your look from becoming too “disco”, make sure that it’s the only metallic element in your ensemble.  You don’t want to be a walking mirror ball!  That doesn’t mean you can’t wear your favorite gold or silver hoops, or any other accessory, simply that you do want your new metallic piece to be the focus of your outfit.

For those who are a little timid, you may want to opt for a sequin or metallic fabric or leather handbag that will feed your need for shine, but keep you from glaring too brightly!  No matter what, you always know the best way to create your own style. It’s by experimenting with the season’s hottest looks at Goodwill for a reasonable price. Shine on everyone!
