5 Easy Summer Essentials
When it comes to summer, there are 5 absolute basics that every man, woman and child should have at their disposal. These would be your “go to” items that can be dressed up or down and have the ease associated with this breezy and warm time of year.
The list contains classic pieces for guys or gals to help get you through many a summer style quandary of “What should I wear?” Look into your closet or dresser, and be sure you have all of these essential items. If you don’t have them, what a great reason to shop your local Goodwill Retail Store & Donation Center and add them to your summer fashion mix! Let’s get started.
- White Cotton Button-Down Shirt
Sharon Stone made a white GAP button-down famous by tying it over her long skirt for the Oscars in 1998. That is a great example of how a simple white shirt can transform anything into fashion. Add a liberal dose of accessories or pair it with a complicated skirt, dress or pair of slacks, and something magical can happen. Wear it as a summer topper, layered over a tank with jeans for a sophisticated summer look.
- Polo Shirt (Golf Shirt)
A classic polo shirt can work for many different style sensibilities. If you’re more of a rocker, look for screen-printed pop art designs; if you’re preppy, go for a bright pastel or jewel tone; and if you’re a continental type, just go with basic black or any other neutral.
- Shorts
The most democratic of fashion staples is the short. The style you wear is totally up to you, your comfort zone, and your style sense. Short shorts can totally rock if you have long legs and toned thighs, no matter what your size. My favorite is the soft short, which serves almost like a skirt but is made of rayon, soft cotton, or even jersey. These can be dressed up or down and are always soft and comfy. Do it yourself’ers can simply cut jeans off into whatever they like and create everything from the rolled “boyfriend Capri” to the “Daisy Dukes” look. Wear a short that flatters, and you’ll always look cool.
- Tank Top
Basic or menswear-inspired tank tops are a summer fundamental that you just can’t have too many of. Under sheer cotton tops or standing alone as a backdrop for belts, necklaces or scarves, they are always working overtime when the weather is hot. Look for adaptations of this look that softly drape from the scoop neck and other variations, like racer backs and t-backs. These tops always look classy when worn appropriately.
- Deck Shoes
Nautical always works when it comes to casual sporty shoes for summer. The unisex appeal and the multitude of designs available make it easy to access this classic look. Sporty with bright colors, or sturdy in brown leather with contrasting top stitch, the feeling is summer casual, and this type of shoe provides more protection than a sandal. Keep a pair on hand as they work well for a variety of fashion situations.
All of these items can be combined with each other and a few accessories to give you casual chic all summer long. Remember: a good working wardrobe is made up of many pieces that, when combined, create a multitude of outfits. Get your summer fashion on by reducing what you don’t wear and using my tried and true suggestions to get the most out of your next trip to Goodwill! Happy summer!
