'Dress' Right for Summer!
I think that if you asked any smart and stylish woman what the most indispensable piece of clothing in her wardrobe was, she would probably say a great dress. Maybe it would be a wrap dress that allows her to adjust the fit or that A-line jumper that flatters her figure just right.
This spring and summer, dresses are definitely the rule and not the exception. Luckily, when I shop at Goodwill for a photo shoot, I always head toward the dress rack. Not only are there always lots of choices but also, from a practical standpoint, they are the easiest to fit on a model. So, join me and let’s take a look at the top frock trends:
White isn’t innocent and plain anymore this season. Eyelet, embroidery, ruffles, textured fabrics, and feminine details create a more dramatic silhouette for this venerable summer performer. The old adage “white will make you look larger” has been proven wrong over and over again. In reality, monochromatic dressing is always slimming as long as the fabric is skimming. Keep accessories in the same tones, like silver gold or ivory, and you’re good to go.
Citrus colors are a juicy, bold and fresh choice now. When it comes to colorful dresses, they are everywhere, so choose the colors that complement your skin tone instead of bright shades that overpower. The easiest way to embrace this trend is with a summery tropical dress, in citrus tones of yellow, orange or lime. Citrus colors are unabashedly fun and cheerful so they’re perfect for parties and picnics. If you are a little shy when it comes to color, look for accessories like a clutch, patent leather belt or shoes to add zing to your summer styling, and keep your look fashion forward.
Embellished dresses have managed to become another widely accepted look over the last few years. With large jewels sewn around the neckline to the top of the bust only, they make a huge statement. An embellished collar works exactly like jewelry and frames the face to keep the focus there! This style generally is meant for evening wear only and, since the jewelry is already there, all you need to complete the look is a pair of high heeled sandals and a clutch to look utterly captivating.
Dramatic draping has taken center stage as well, with a nod to both Grecian influence and ‘50s sophistication. Necklines with elaborate folds, lightly ruched seaming, and a focus on the torso are the hallmarks of this look. Think Grace Kelly’s Oscar gown the year she won - ladylike yet provocative. The combination of ladylike innocence and subtle sexiness looks fresh.
Maxi, mini and all skirt lengths in between give women of every shape and size tons of choices for “dressing” up their wardrobe. Be sure to take the time to try on each and every style and length to find the look appropriate to you, your lifestyle, and your body type.
