Gaga for Gingham Gingham is a light plain weave fabric with checks, stripes, or plaids in white and colored cotton. Real gingham has no right or wrong side with respect to color because of how it is woven. It is also quite famous as the fabric that Dorothy’s dress is made from in “The Wizard of Oz.” This season, this unique yet common fabric is also taking designers on a trip to fashion land! I want to show you how it’s being utilized by upscale and low-end retailers and designers alike.
The key is to wear this pattern in a more unexpected and unconventional way. We all know that gingham will make a really sweet little girl’s dress, but what are the other options that are out there? Let’s take a look at the runways and real ways of it all.
Gingham can be sexy and demure at the same time. Strapless summer cocktail dresses will give way to ruffled skirts worn under denim jumpers. Flowing vintage-looking day dresses will have a modern feel with asymmetrical bodices and draping. Variations of the print go sheer for layering or gauzy and full skirted for ballerina style looks.
Showstoppers seen in magazines would include; a ‘70s inspired scarlet gingham jumpsuit, red gingham cropped jacket, and even a goldenrod yellow bikini! A short-sleeved shirtwaist dress is a great standby as well and may be belted or left flowing for the warm summer days ahead. Grey and tones of tan and white make a chic statement when done in gingham.
This trend extends itself all the way to accessories like these fabulous red and white Christian Louboutin peep toe pumps or the Nike Air Royalty in gingham. This is one hard working fabric!
On the more traditional end of things, we have the soft button-down shirts in many shades of pastel pink, yellow, green and blue gingham (which in itself is a preppy look when layered with a sweater over the shoulders). You can credit many designers like Ralph Lauren, Lilly Pulitzer, Izod and even Tommy Hilfiger for making this type of look a staple for yuppies and preppies alike in the ‘80s and beyond.
As far as classic sportswear goes, you must admit that you can’t go wrong with black and white patterns ever! Whether it’s a button-down worn with a jacket or a zip-front mod look, this color combination and pattern always seems crisp and punchy since it was brought into more modern focus in the swinging ‘60s.
Keep in mind that gingham is a graphic pattern that easily combines with other patterns. Step up your style by adding this print you can really rely on. I personally have a couple of black and white gingham check shirts that I wear regularly. A colorful patterned tie can work with them as well as layering in color with t-shirts or tanks underneath. Gingham also looks great layered under vests, and fitted jackets.
