'Dude' Up! Menswear fashion 'Dude' Up!
Style icons come and go, but some trends endure (and rightly so). The menswear trend is all over the place this year. Has it ever really gone away? Vintage movie buffs may remember Marlene Dietrich who preferred man tailored suits in her time away from Hollywood and then, many years later in the 1970s, Diane Keaton brought us layered menswear in her role as the quirky title character in “Annie Hall.”
In recent years Sharon Stone has been known to sport a man’s white button-down dress shirt as a top over anything from jeans to evening skirts. Why not try your hand at being “one of the boys” by stepping out to the Goodwill Retail Store & Donation Center nearby and look for some of the easiest pieces to work into your current wardrobe?
Suiting
Slacks, jackets, and vests… take a stroll through the men’s area at your local Goodwill. The easiest fit of all to find on the racks is the vest. Many have adjustable backs to make them fit snugly. For jackets, focus on fit through the shoulders, and length. If it feels too big for you, it probably is. The exception? Slightly larger is ok for pulling off the “boyfriend” look. Roll up the sleeves, and pair with a dress for a new look! Slacks, don’t forget, can always be hemmed. Look for your waist size and make sure to try them on. In our picture, you can see she uses a belt to cinch in the waist of her slacks.
Shirts
The white button-down shirt is the most classic, but a ruffled tux shirt is also great with a pair of jeans and some heels! Almost any button-down shirt can work for this look, but stick with more classic styles for real menswear appeal.
Accessories
Ties, watches, belts and shoes that have that masculine feel are what I’d scout when shopping at Goodwill. Make sure that the belts fit around your waist. You could always punch a few new holes with an awl to make it smaller.
Shoes that are small enough for a woman might be hard to find, but menswear-inspired shoes and flats are a lot easier to find. A great pair of brogues looks so cool with skirts and other outfits and adds a signature menswear vibe to your wardrobe.
The watch like your dad might have worn has now become a fashion statement as well. Gold and silver classic styles with leather bands will look the best. Don’t forget that we talked about hats last week. The right fedora can do wonders for when you think you’re having a bad hair day!
So try for your best “Victor Victoria” impersonation and you, too, can take your style into the boy’s club realm with some of the fantastic items from Goodwill Retail Store & Donation Center near you!
