Bedroom Makeover—Accessorizing Your Room
The last piece of the re-decorating-a-room puzzle is the accessories. Think of them as jewelry. After you’re dressed, you carefully choose earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, belts and scarves to complete your outfit. It’s the same when decorating a room. The accessories finish or complete the project. Most importantly, they should reflect your personality. I did notice that my charming little dresser looked a bit lonely without something to dress it up.
Design Tip 1: Don’t forget to think vertically when creating a display.
The wall space above the dresser needs just as much attention as the surface. A painting would have been an option, but I wanted something different.
I re-purposed a frame I used for a previous project. Click on “Chalk it Up”.
This time I removed the mat and chalk board insert and painted the frame glossy red.
Design Tip 2: Unusual items make your display much more interesting. The key is to make them personal and special.
I love these little jewelry boxes. You can find tons of them at any Goodwill store. They come in a couple of sizes and finishes. Most are priced between $1.99 and $4.99.
Some distressed finishes are charming and add interest, but not on these boxes. Spray paint is an inexpensive and fast way to update all kinds of things.
Design Tip 3: When displaying accessories, group items in odd numbers.
They looked OK staggered on the dresser and on top of each other but the negative space within the frame needed to be filled in more. So I stacked them up.
You will notice, I stacked only four (an even number) instead of five. In this arrangement, they become one item not four separate things!
Design Tip 4: A great arrangement features items at differing heights.
The fifth box would have made the tower the same height as the lamp. Confused yet?
I added the lamp I showed you in “Light Show” a few weeks ago. And voila, the display has three items, of different heights and textures!
I could have stopped, but it needed a bit more. I added a little gumball machine just because it’s red. Fill it with colorful gumballs and it will be even more fun.
The strands of pearls spilling out of the boxes add glamour and a touch of elegance. It is a bedroom after all and these are jewelry boxes!
Finally, the lamp, stack of boxes and gumball machine become the grouping of three. The picture frame anchors the display.
Once you start rearranging and thinking odd numbers, height and texture your displays will look professionally staged!
