Goodwill Style: Cover Up

Remember my inspiration fabrics? I purchased the traditional pinch-pleated drapery panels in gold, the purple curtain and the animal print shawl.

I cut the gold drapery to fit a twin bed and hemmed the raw edges for a custom bedspread.

I love pillow shams. They pull the whole look of the bedding together. But I don’t see any point in removing the pillow each night to sleep on. Invest in inexpensive pillow forms so your decorative shams are always intact. (I personally like soft feather pillows for sleeping. Splurge on a couple for a good night’s sleep!)

Since I have two drapery panels, there is plenty of fabric for a sham. Cut two pieces of fabric 1" larger than your pillow form. I used leftover fabric from the headboard to make contrasting flanges. This is advanced sewing, so refer to how-to book to get the details. It’s a bit more complicated, but worth the trouble. Look how great it looks with the headboard!

Design Tip: I deliberately cut the fabric for the sham so the strié pattern runs perpendicular to the coverlet. It’s the little details like this that gives a design a professional look.

A much as I like this fabric, it may be a bit too calming. So to shake it up, I laid the animal print shawl on the end of the bed - hotel style. (The kitty just had to get in the photo! She’s a unique accessory.)

Design Trend: The latest trend in high-end hotel décor is duvet covers over luxurious feather comforters. At the end of the bed is a punch of pattern or color. It might be a folded blanket, but usually a pretty throw.

I simply gathered it in the middle. I could twist it or tie with a bit of purple fabric so it stays in place. The result is a high-end look on a budget. Can’t get better than that!
