Goodwill Style: Bedroom Makeover, Part II

After you have established your redecorating plan (how will the room be used, your style and your budget), the fun begins.

But where do you start? There are many ways to look for inspiration. Maybe you have a great piece of art or a wonderful rug. Colors from a painting or rug can establish your palette. Or you might have a great accessory from your travels that will set the theme. A piece of furniture can also determine the look. It doesn’t matter what it is, something you love can become the jumping off point.

Since I have free rein for this bedroom project, I shopped several Goodwill stores looking for something to inspire me. I found a pair of drapery panels in shades of gold. I love the nubby texture of the fabric.

They’re basic pinch pleated curtains that would have been mounted on a traverse rod.

They have a retro look and feel. Remember Harvest Gold from the early ‘70s? They are in excellent condition and, at $4.99 a panel, the price was right. I think I will repurpose the fabric into bedding.

Once I found my inspiration, shopping for other elements and colors was easier. Although I only found one purple embroidered drapery panel, the color is a beautiful contrast to the gold.

Color Tip: Colors opposite each other on the color wheel are Complementary Colors and always work well together: Red & Green, Blue & Orange, Yellow & Purple.

Not only do these colors look great, but the soft satin weave and dark embroidered flower plays off the texture of the drapery panel.

Finally I looked for pattern.

Trend Tip: Animal prints are the hottest thing in design. A little goes a long way, but what a statement they can make.

This little reversible shawl will make great pillows or some accessory. A bargain at $2.99.

Next up is furniture!
