Q & A

I thought I would answer some reader questions this week. After all, the column is called, “Ask the Experts.”

What table décor colors are in this year? Are bright colors part of the picture? - Daphne

Dear Daphne,

This spring I am seeing dinnerware in muted spice tones like warm gold, paprika, toned down pumpkin and medium sage green. However, when I shop Goodwill, I simply look for dishes in colors that “jump” out at me. Quite often, I plan a table setting around an amazing find!

I love color but almost always recommend buying white dinner plates. That way you can change the look of your table with accessories and linens. I like being able to use the same plates for different dinners and brunches. White plates look great in both formal and casual settings. I change the look, theme and atmosphere with colorful salad plates, soup bowls and napkins.

Lime green soup bowls add a big splash of color to a simple six-sided white dinner plate. Imagine the look with hot pink or navy blue instead!

In the next few weeks, we will be doing lots of table settings for upcoming holidays and events to give you more ideas!

Can you explain how to cover a pillow with a summer scarf? - Dorothy

Hello, Dorothy,

Changing pillows is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to update your family room or bed.

I’m always on the look out for feather pillows to recover when I shop. They are softer, squishier and more comfortable than basic fiberfill.

Scarves are fabulous fashion accessories. Why not interchange them from neckline to sofa-line?

I took a plain sage green silk pillow with a down insert ($4.99) and wrapped it with a colorful scarf. A simple stitch or safety pins will hold it in place.

Or gather the scarf across the middle of the pillow and tie it in the back.

This scarf was long enough so the “bow” becomes a piece of artwork. No sewing required.

Keep your questions and comments coming. I love to hear from you.
