Pressure-free Canning

It’s almost Memorial Day weekend and that means the start of summer. Hurray! When planning picnics, parties and cook outs, I look for new ways to avoid using disposable paper goods whenever possible.

That means getting creative with something as basic as canning jars. A jar of freshly tapped maple syrup or homemade jelly can’t be beat.

When the food is gone, turn the jar into a casual vase.

They also make great candle holders. The wind can’t blow out the light!

Add a bit of sand from the beach or sandbox and drop in a candle.

If you live near the beach, take advantage of tiny seashells. They’re perfect for anchoring votive candles.

Or purchase a bag of glass shells.

Healthy snacks anyone? Kids are more likely to eat their veggies when served in fun jars. Celery stalks with the leaves left on are impossible to resist.

Plastic forks and knives might be most practical at an outdoor picnic, but take them out of the box.

My favorite idea is to use them in place of drinking glasses. Lemonade and iced tea looks so refreshing served in jars. I collected dozens of them for a big summer party I had. They’re fun and festive and nothing to throw away.

I would love to hear your ideas for re-using canning jars.

Take a moment to remember those who lost their lives defending our freedom this Memorial Day.
