Chalk It Up!

Chalk It Up!

A secret to good design is to make sure you have contrast somewhere in your room. If everything is too matchy-matchy, it gets boring really fast. For example, you could make an island from an old wood work bench and put it in the middle of a sleek, contemporary kitchen. Or toss bright graphic pillows on a traditional sofa for an instant update. Tension creates drama and interest.

That’s what I love about this communication board: it’s old-school with a modern twist.

I found this great frame for $4.99. The mat was in good shape, even the picture was lovely. The only thing missing was the glass.

Instead of removing the picture and mats, I decided to re-use it. Using a medium point marker, I drew a whimsical scroll at the corners.

A little zig-zag border adds another fun element (and contrast) to the gilt frame.

A couple of coats of chalkboard paint and your family will always be informed.

Some spray paint and the frame would have a whole new look. I may do that as well some time soon. But for now, I like the contrast between old, traditional and modern family!
