Ask the Experts - Merri: Egg-cellent Egg-cellent
Easter is late this year, which gives us more time to get creative. No
need to purchase special egg dye tablets; just use what you have in your
pantry.
Simply add two tablespoons of white
vinegar and a few drops of food color to cold water (just enough to
cover an egg). I always use ceramic coffee mugs because they’re less
likely to spill and you can pop them in the dishwasher once you’re done.
Baskets
Instead of the usual Easter “grass,” try something different: I cut the
fringe off an old chenille bedspread and tucked it into a little basket.
If it’s cotton, you could even dye it, too.
Who said you have to use a basket for your Easter egg
hunt. Fill a pencil box with loose ribbon to cradle the eggs. Add fancy
pens, makers or erasers for an extra treat. The best part? No added
calories!
Nesting
For a grown-up Easter look, I found yards of gold and sequin cord. I
twisted it into little nest shapes. You can make individual nests for
each place setting or keep them together as part of your centerpiece.
Candlesticks
If you want to really personalize your eggs, make color photo copies of family members. Be sure to look for “small” heads!
Cut out, use water based glue and paste to the colored
eggs. You might have to cut little slits around the edge for a smooth
finish.
Look for an unexpected way to display eggs. This set of
matching candle sticks is elegant and whimsical! If you want to get the
dinner conversation really going, dig out old photos of your family and
friends!
