Using Your Resume to Market Yourself

Using Your Resume to Market YourselfOver the past few weeks I have been showing outfit examples and strategies to use to find interview attire at Goodwill. (See What to Wear to an Interview by Shopping at Goodwill and Tie Shopping at Goodwill for Your Next Job Interview). Having excellent interview attire is extremely important when you are face-to-face in front of employers, but articulating what you bring to the table professionally is what will get you the job you’re going after. Before you receive the opportunity to interview, you need to show employers what it is that makes you stand out as a candidate. Your resume is the best way to show employers how you’ve made an impact in your previous positions.

Your resume is the first impression that employers receive when you apply for a job. You want this impression to be completely professional and to show the person reading your resume what you bring to the table. Here is an example of what a resume should look like:

Resume sampleAll of your professional experiences should be in bullet points. They are easy for employers to read and should quickly show how you’ve made an impact. Employers are only looking at your resume from 10-25 seconds. During that timeframe, they are looking to make a decision whether to move you forward in the interview process or not. Be very clear when listing your experience! Every second counts.

Detail is extremely important in your resume. Your bullet points should leave no questions unanswered. Any easy way to figure out if you are doing this is to go through each bullet point and ask yourself if you are missing any information. Take a bullet point like “Provided customer service.” How many customers are you providing service to? How often? Was it good customer service or bad customer service? By answering these questions your bullet point turns into, “Provided customer service for 30 customers a day and exceeded the company standard.” See how much a little detail can do?
