Goodwill Fashion Tips: Layering Your Outfit

Goodwill Fashion Tips: Layering Your OutfitLayering is mastering the technique of combining items to produce an amazing outfit. Many people use layering to stay warm, but it is an easy way to exemplify fashion versatility on another level. If you want to show people you’re more than just a t-shirt and a pair of faded jeans, add a little layering to your repertoire. On your next Goodwill shopping trip, think of how you can combine different items to produce an incredible outfit.

Start with a theme for your outfit. Have an idea of the direction you want to head toward before you start randomly piecing together different items.  When searching Goodwill, look for a shirt or top that you can use as the foundation to your outfit. From there, you can find other pieces to build around it.

Create a color scheme. Multiple colors are great, as long as the colors mesh well. You can start with one specific color and add additional layers of the same color family, or use different colors as accents. Neutral colors are a great starting point. Many Goodwill stores organize items by color making it very easy for you to find something that complements your skin tone.

Each layer should be something that can be worn on its own. Think about button-up shirts, vests…even old jackets. These items make excellent outer layers to your outfit.

Proportion, proportion, proportion! Try on an oversized top or jacket partnered with a pair of fitted jeans or leggings. Why does this kind of outfit work so well? Because the human eye naturally looks for equilibrium. As soon as that equilibrium is spotted, voila! You can find a really nice blazer or suit jacket for under $10 at Goodwill. Use one as the outer layer to your outfit.

Diversify your texture to create a balance. Like proportion, various textures paired together create the ultimate outfit. Lightly textured items can be paired with heavier textures to create a more polished look.

Add your accessorizing touch. This is the easiest and most common form of layering. Scarves, jewelry, hats, and even wearable technology are all perfect examples of accessories you can use to put the finishing touches on your layered masterpiece. Don’t forget your belt! You can find great quality belts at Goodwill for as low as 99 cents!

Remember to try on every item you find so that you can approve the final outfit. Layering can be a bit of a challenge at first. Remember that it is very similar to putting together pieces of a puzzle. Some pieces can be combined very easily and some may not work at all. Keep an open mind when you’re shopping at Goodwill and do not limit yourself to items, colors, or textures that you’re used to. Try something different and take a step outside of your comfort zone. You’ll thank yourself when you end up with a phenomenal outfit!
