Mother’s Day Pin-Up

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on May 3, 2016 12:01:47 PM

Mother's Day pin upHandmade gifts are always treasured by moms and grandmothers—especially for Mother’s Day. Shop Goodwill and your own home for a few supplies and you can make a unique gift for your mom.

This pin cushion is perfect for the quilter, sewer or crafter. But even if your mother doesn’t fit in any of those categories, this pin cushion is so personal, she’ll love it anyway.

First, shop in your own home. Dig out an old baby blanket or receiving blanket or even old baby clothes. I found a well-worn baby quilt.

Use a 10-in. dinner plate to trace a circle on the wrong side of the fabric. Cut out the circle with pinking shears. Pinking shears just keep the fabric from unraveling so, if you don’t have a pair, regular scissors will do.

Then look for clear candlesticks at Goodwill. It’s a home décor accessory I often find at the stores and for less than $2.

Center a small handful of quilt batting in the center of your circle (on the wrong side). You can also use the stuffing from an old pillow.

Place the stuffing and circle on top of the candlestick. Wrap a narrow ribbon around the fabric and candlestick two times. Pull tight, knot and make a bow.

That’s it. If mom or grandma aren’t crafters, they can use it for jewelry pins. Since it’s made from a special piece of family history, it will be treasured forever.
